Occasional paper: nursing on the European map
Article Abstract:
The World Health Organisation conducted a study about the nursing profession in its 50 member states in Europe to get a clearer picture of nursing in each country, and also so that accurate statistics, ideas and proposals could be put together. Nursing profiles were drawn up using both formal and informal sources and the information was made readily available. Differences in terminology between countries caused problems but the resulting profiles were assessed. Finding out about the duties of nurses in so many places proved to be difficult and implementing change is also therefore difficult.

Nurses at risk: The health of nurses has historically been a low priority
Article Abstract:
Evidence shows that many nurses and midwives suffer serious occupational health problems, but the NHS has a poor record of looking after its staff. Nurses are often made to feel that they should put service before self. However there have been some positive developments, including initiatives such as the Health at Work in the NHS project and stricter European legislation relating to workplace health and safety. Legislation however does not solve the problem, although it may be used as a lever.
