Ohio ob-gyns give birth to new network; facing HMOs, they organize to survive managed care
Article Abstract:
Five obstetrician/gynecologists (ob-gyns) in Dayton, OH, have organized a multispecialty group by following a management services organization model. The doctors believe that such organizations are necessary for physicians to survive the encroachment of a managed care environment. Member contributions have financed the project, but according to experts, there is plenty of outside financing available for physician groups that have strong business plans. Although it is too soon to tell, the doctors are confident that they will succeed. Tips for organizing physician groups are included.

'Dating' can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be
Article Abstract:
Physicians that are considering merging their practices with other physicians' groups need to be aware of the market environment within which they practice before they incur the often staggering expenses associated with a merger. The chief factor in determining the ease with which they will find a party to their merger plans is the level of consolidation which has been achieved in their market region. Factors driving physician consolidation include competition from national providers and the control that physicians retain over their own practices by working through groups.

Managed care formularies: is a reasonable solution possible?
Article Abstract:
Managed care formularies complicate a physician's ability to manage a practice. Doctors have to remain cognizant of differences between the formularies of different managed care plans. Physicians also need to deal with plans that decide to change their formularies. One way that physicians in Colorado are dealing with managed care formularies is to develop a standardized way to present drug information to doctors.
