Old and new ways to repair inguinal hernias
Article Abstract:
Hernia repair has traditionally been a difficult process because the surgery pulls together tissues under tension. Consequently, patients experience much postoperative pain, sometimes lasting a year or more. Tension-free techniques have been developed that use a patch to reinforce the hernia. Laparoscopic repair was introduced in the 1980's and allows the defect to be repaired from the inside. A 1997 study found that patients treated with laparoscopic repair had fewer complications, less pain and returned to work sooner. However, some studies have found that laparoscopic repair is more expensive.

Adenomatous polyps of the colon
Article Abstract:
Case study of a 52-year-old with no personal or family history of colon cancer, colonic polyps or inflammatory bowel disease is presented who revealed no abnormalities except for a 1.5-cm pedunculated polyp at the hepatic flexure during a screening colonoscopy. Colonoscopic surveillance is recommended at intervals that vary according to the number and types of adenomas found and the presence or absence of a family history of colorectal polyps and cancer.
