Ontario hospitals are looking to woo U.S. patients
Article Abstract:
Ontario hospitals are marketing their specialty procedures to US patients to increase revenues depleted by Canada's publicly funded health care system. Canadian hospitals operate on a global budget, with 70% of revenues coming from the provincial government; fundraising and other sources make up the balance. Some medical procedures cost far less in Canada than they do in the US. For example, bone marrow transplants cost less than $80,000, while they may cost up to $200,000 in the US. Critics contend that Canadian patients may become a second priority if Canadian hospitals take in US patients.

Caring about care at the end of life
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) has been visibly active in its advocacy efforts opposing potential legalization of physician-assisted suicide. The AMA encourages physicians and medical personnel to focus upon end-of-life issues, so that critically ill patients may spend their final days as positively as possible. The AMA's Institute for Ethics will devote much of its resources to investigating ways to improve the quality of end-of-life care.
