A comparison of male and female clients in substance abuse treatment
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to isolate the needs and characteristics of women involved in substance abuse treatment. Studies were conducted on substance abuse treatment facilities for eight months. Results showed that women addicts had the same sociodemographic properties, family history, alcohol or drug history and treatment completion as men. However, women were found to be more emotionally distressed and report a history of sexual abuse. It was recommended that treatment for women addicts focus on childhood trauma, particularly sexual abuse, and emotions dealing wth anger and victimization.

Common issues for parents in a methadone maintenance group
Article Abstract:
Difficulties related to the maintenance of parenting roles by heroin addicts undergoing a methadone maintenance program were discussed. Two family therapy schools are involved in this drug abuse treatment approach. These are the Structural Family Therapy and the Bowen Family Systems. These two techniques enable the recognition of common themes that emerge in a therapeutic group. Although progress is realized slowly and incrementaly, a supportive atmosphere can further the advantages of these two approaches.
