Osteoporosis Among Estrogen-Deficient Women--United States, 1988-1994
Article Abstract:
It is too early to determine whether all postmenopausal women should be screened for osteoporosis using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). DXA is a way of measuring bone mineral density and low bone density is a sign of osteoporosis. During the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2,314 postmenopausal women were screened using DXA. Seventeen percent of the women were diagnosed with osteoporosis as a result, and 93% were unaware that they had osteoporosis.
