Osteoporosis: The hidden illness
Article Abstract:
Osteoporosis causes reduced skeletal mass and skeletal microarchitectural deterioration, and could become an important public health problem with the increase in life expectancy. It is important to develop preventive treatments as osteoporosis is irreversible. It is believed that the mechanisms leading to bone loss are multifactorial, mainly affecting older people. It has been suggested that high childhood calcium intakes may be significant in determining maximal peak bone mass (PBM). Diagnosis may be complicated by problems in assessing bone status, and fractures may often be the first indication of disease. It is indicated that reducing smoking and alcohol consumption, and increasing calcium consumption may be helpful in prevention.

Making sense of cancer chemotherapy
Article Abstract:
Primary cancer tumours and distant metastases can both be effectively treated through chemotherapy, which uses cytotoxic drugs. This approach can be used to treat early or clinically undetectable metastases, and can be particularly effective in treating systemic cancers. There are a number of different categories of cytotoxic drugs, including plant alkaloids, antitumour antibiotics, alkylating agents and antimetabolites.
