Hostess folly?
Article Abstract:
The Royal Infirmary, Wearside, UK, is planning to employ 'hostesses' in outpatients, responsible for the smooth running of patient flow through the department. Other responsibilities include keeping the waiting areas tidy, checking that consultants' coffee trays are full, entertaining patients' children with books and toys, checking the toilets and various other time-permitting duties. The posts were described as 'general dogsbodies' at the National Union of Public Employees conference, Scarborough.

Raising awareness
Article Abstract:
The increasing number of work-place injuries caused by bad lifting practices has prompted the UK's National Back Pain Association to recommend that nurses avoid all manual handling. Some 80,000 nurses a year hurt their backs and nearly 4,000 of those have to leave the profession because of the seriousness of their injuries. The association believes that the main reasons that nurses suffer injury are lack of continuous training and the nurses' inability to follow the rules at all times.
