'Outbreak' of optic and peripheral neuropathy in Cuba?
Article Abstract:
The outbreak of optic and peripheral neuropathy (inflammation of nerves) in Cuba may have been caused by different types of nutritional deficiencies. The outbreak affected more than 43,000 Cubans between Oct 1991 and Jun 1993. A research study examined 20 Cuban patients between 19 and 63 years old with symptoms of optic or peripheral neuropathy or both. Seventeen patients had vision disturbance, and 13 met the criteria for optic neuropathy. Sixteen patients had neurological symptoms. The patients' diets included low amounts of certain types of vitamins. The patients' symptoms were similar to those of nutritional deficiency syndromes. Cubans eat a large amount of cassava, a vegetable that contains cyanide. Cyanide poisoning can cause optic and peripheral neuropathy. Genetic susceptibility may also have played a role in the outbreak. Cuban patients with optic and peripheral neuropathy are being treated with multivitamins. Multivitamins were also given to all Cuban citizens to prevent the development of these disorders.

Symptomatic Treatment of Painful Neuropathy
Article Abstract:
Further research is needed to determine whether the drug gabapentin is effective in treating diabetic neuropathy. This is a nerve disease caused by diabetes. Most drugs used to treat neuropathy block the pain. Tricyclic antidepressants are often used, but some patients can not take them. A 1998 study found that gabapentin may be effective in treating neuropathy.
