Ovarian cancer: diagnostic limitations, treatment obstacles

Article Abstract:

There has been very little improvement in life expectancy of women with ovarian cancer and very little is expected in the near future. The exception has been the introduction of the drug paclitaxel, which extends survival by about one year. When detected and treated early, the 5-year survival rate is 85%-90%, but there are no reliable early-screening tests. Of women who received surgery in early-stage cancer, one study showed that only 10% received the most up-to-date diagnostic analysis or treatment, and few of the surgeons were properly trained for the procedures.

High-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell transplantation may benefit some women with ovarian cancer, according to a study of 421 women. Stem cell transplants are given to restore the immune system, which is damaged by the chemotherapy.

Autologous stem-cell transplantation in ovarian cancer: is more better?

Article Abstract:

Stem cell transplants for ovarian cancer may be more toxic than they are beneficial. In a study published in 2000, 31 of the 421 women treated with high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplants died of a complication of the treatment.
