Oxygenation in fetal lambs supported by extrauterine right atrium to artery extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
Article Abstract:
Oxygen delivered artificially through extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may provide enough oxygen to the head but not to the heart. ECMO is used to support the lungs and heart of newborns with respiratory or heart failure. Researchers analyzed the effect of right heart atrium to artery ECMO in 13 lamb fetuses. The fetal blood flow rate through the membrane and the level of oxygen at the membrane both varied during ECMO. The oxygenated blood went to the head, while the left ventricle of the heart did not receive enough oxygenated blood. This situation may be true as long as an infant's circulatory system is in the fetal, rather than independent, mode. A better way of delivering oxygen through ECMO may be needed. The use of 100% oxygen in these cases could harm the fetus.

Unselected low-risk pregnancies and the effect of continuous intrapatum fetal heart rate monitoring on umbilical blood gases and cerebral palsy
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to evaluate the clinical validity of electronic fetal heart rate monitoring to detect fetal acidemia and to evaluate the prevalence of cerebral palsy in unselected low-risk pregnancies. Cerebral palsy caused by intrapartum asphyxia was restricted to unavoidable accidents under continuous fetal heart rate monitoring.

Transplacental transmission of maternal B-cell lymphoma
Article Abstract:
A case of maternal malignant lymphoma transferred to the fetus during pregnancy in a 29-year-old woman is discussed. This may result in growth restriction, fetal acidemia and brain damage.
