Access to community-based medical services and number of hospitalizations among patients with HIV disease: are they related?
Article Abstract:
Patients with HIV infection may have fewer hospitalizations if they have access to adequate community services and outpatient care. Researchers interviewed 217 HIV patients while they were hospitalized. Half said they had adequate community services. Half had been hospitalized two or more times since becoming infected. Those with adequate access to community services were less likely to be hospitalized when compared to those with no access. Many complications of AIDS, such as opportunistic infections, can be treated on an outpatient basis if caught early.

Life expectancy for Russians dropped by more than three years for women and more than six years for men between 1990 and 1994. Cardiovascular disease and injuries accounted for 65% of the decrease. Contributing factors include economic instability, increased alcohol consumption, poor health care, use of tobacco products and depression.
