Painful ignorance
Article Abstract:
Many cancer nurses are very unwilling to use opioids for terminally ill patients, and this leaves the patients suffering unnecessarily, according to GP Lynette Moss. The general public understands little about the use of morphine, and prejudices against it are common. These prejudices can in some cases be shared by health workers too. This situation could be eased if more time were devoted to palliative care during the clinical training of health workers, according to Dame Cicely Saunders, a key figure in the UK's hospice movement.

The ABC Hospital in Mexico City is a high tech private centre catering to people with money and the outpatients' clinic is a charity financed by wealthy benefactors. The clinic offers primary, anti and postnatal care and emergency cases are often admitted and treated in the main hospital at no charge.
