Ethnic minority staff needed for terminal care boost
Article Abstract:
Services which care for the terminally ill should become more sensitive to cultural issues, according to research from the National Council for Hospice and Specialist Palliative Care Services. At present, there are very few black or Asian nurses, doctors and other health professionals in specialist palliative care work, so black and Asian patients have no members of staff with whom they can identify. It is therefore essential to develop effective equal opportunities policies and ensure that black and ethnic minority staff are more widely recruited and retained.

Staff struggle to cope as A&E crisis worsens
Article Abstract:
Many of the UK's accident and emergency departments are being stretched to their absolute limit as they face severe staff shortages and a rise in emergency admissions. Some local managers have attributed problems to the impact of internal market reforms, while others have pointed to a lack of intensive care nurses. In a number of cases, patients have had to be transported long distances to a hospital able to admit them.

Ethnic dilemma: an alarming lack of health visitors from ethnic minorities has been revealed by survey for the HVA
Article Abstract:
Only 3% of health visitors are from Asian or black British communities according to an HVA survey. The profession needs to be marketed to school leavers, and parents should be educated so as nursing is not viewed as a second choice to finding a matchmaking partner. Lancashire College of Nursing and Health Services in Preston is developing links with the Muslim community through meetings and open days.
