Perfect timing: the discomfort caused by catheter irritation can often be avoided by choosing the right time for removal
Article Abstract:
The use of urinary catheters is common in people undergoing urological surgery, and although most patients have a common desire to have the catheter removed due to irritation, the removal itself can often cause problems. This often relates to the time of day that the catheter is removed, with doctors believing the most appropriate time is in the morning. However nurses felt that removal at midnight was better and a survey was undertaken. It found that most patients slept well after midnight catheter removal and 87.5% of patients undergoing midnight catheter removal did not need recatheterisation.

Catheter concerns
Article Abstract:
Good practice in urinary catheter management minimises problems associated with long-term use. Initial assessment of need and medical history ensure the appropriate choice of urethral or suprapubic catheter. Assessment also aids identification of possible problems. Appraisal of patients' capabilities is necessary as mental or physical disability may prevent effective management. Patient education should cover routine care, possible complications and sexual matters. Patient comfort should determine replacement periods between three and 12 weeks.
