A detailed mouth examination is described for the purpose of detecting mouth cancer, including pictures of each step. It is based on a method recommended by the World Health Organization and is available as a poster from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

What are the diagnostic protocols for oral cancer screenings?

Dentists should spend more time examining a patient's mouth for signs of oral cancer. This should only take about 2 minutes and should be done at each appointment. Any suspicious lesions should be noted in the patient's medical records and appropriate referrals should be made.
