Phenotypic and genotypic resistance assays: methodology, reliability, and interpretations
Article Abstract:
There are two types of test to see if an HIV patient has a version of HIV that is resistant to one or more AIDS drugs. Phenotypic tests measure the response of the virus to a particular drug, whereas genotypic tests look for gene mutations that have been linked to drug resistance.

Development and application of a genotypic AZT resistance assay: quantitative assessment of the resistance profile of clinical samples and the relative predictive ability of a resistance index
Article Abstract:
An assay is described that can determine whether a strain of HIV is resistant to AZT. The assay could also be used to detect other types of drug resistance in HIV. Doctors could use the assay to decide which AIDS drug to use for any individual patient.

Clinical utility of resistance testing: retrospective and prospective data supporting use and current recommendations
Article Abstract:
Resistance testing may become the standard of care for treating HIV infection. The virus can become resistant to most AIDS drugs, and doctors can avoid treating a patient with an individual drug if tests show the virus is resistant to it.
