Doctor pay issues top Medicare agenda for new HCFA chief

New Health Care Financing Administration chief Nancy-Ann Min DeParle faces many demands. As a result of the 1997 Balanced Budget Act, the agency needs to develop many new Medicaid and Medicare policies. In a meeting with reporters, DeParle noted that the HCFA received less than half of the extra implementation funding it requested. She also faces stresses related to the agency's large-scale reorganization.

Private contracting heats up; right to opt out of Medicare at issue in lawsuit

The United Seniors Assn and some of its members are challenging the constitutionality of Section 4507 of the Balanced Budget Act, which deals with contracting language as it pertains to Medicare private contracting. Medicare recipients are concerned that the The Balance Budget Act of 1997 has eliminated their right to obtain medical services that are outside Medicare.
