Physicians leery about PRO changes; HCFA to propose streamlining complaint process, giving patients more information
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) is taking exception to the Health Care Financing Administration's (HFCA) proposal to streamline the Medicare PRO's beneficiary complaint process. The HFCA proposal is predicated upon giving consumers more data on peer investigations of physicians, a position that consumer advocates claim is congruent with an effective complaint process. However, the AMA believes the proposal, if implemented, will boost medical malpractice litigation and erode doctor-patient relations.

Experts split over impact of recent rise in health costs
Article Abstract:
Experts agree that healthcare costs are again climbing, but they disagree over the degree of the problem. In Apr 1997, the National Coalition on Health Care suggested that healthcare inflation could return to 1980s levels. According to the coalition, healthcare costs will increase 6.4% per year through 2002. Speakers at a gathering sponsored by the Center for Studying Health System Change, however, indicated that predictions of 1980s-like increases are exaggerated.
