Polymer Scientists Engineer Better Remedies
Article Abstract:
Scientists discussed research on the use of polymers to create artificial tissues and organs at the Symposium on Biomedical Polymers for the 21st Century, in March, 2000, in Seattle. Polymers are large molecules that are made by linking together smaller molecules. One group has designed a contact lens that can be worn for a week with few adverse effects. Others are using polymers to deliver drugs inside the eye. Biodegradable polymers can be used as a skeleton on which living tissue can be grown. This can be used to create artificial heart valves.

Loss of Nerve: A Molecular Approach to Better Treatment of Chronic Pain
Article Abstract:
Researchers are working on ways to target nerve cells that transmit pain. They are using a natural process in nerve cells called receptor internalization. In this process, when a substance such as an antibody or a neurotransmitter binds to its receptor on the neuron's surface, both are taken up by the neuron. Researchers take advantage of this process by attaching toxins to substances that bind to nerve cell receptors. Substance P is one of these substances and is involved in pain transmission.
