Improved communication between nurses and physicians can be enhanced through the adoption of interdisciplinary terms and language. These can include mutually acknowledged definitions of medical conditions, methods of physical and psychological risk assessment, identification of causal factors and protocols for decision making. Patients benefit by receiving coordinated care, and medical professionals benefit through an efficient work environment.

The Impact of Physician-Nurse Interaction on Patient Care

Nurse, Physician, and Consumer Role Responsibility Perceived by Health Care Providers

Studies show that while physicians prefer to retain decision-making authority, hospital administrators, social workers and nurses prefer collaborative practice. Years of experience increased belief in shared responsibility among non-physician health care professionals, but had no effect on physicians' desire to maintain their role as final authority.
