Sociology in nurse education: help or hindrance?
Article Abstract:
Nurse educators believe an understanding of sociology is vital to nursing practice, with typical sociological material including the sociology of the family and sociology of illness and health. Nursing has conventionally been based on natural science disciplines, while sociological knowledge is multi-paradigmatic. Some nurse educators believe education in sociology can lead to greater autonomy and professionalism for nurses, but this is not necessarily the case.

Article Abstract:
New teaching programmes for nurses and midwives in Scotland have resulted in a new educational culture which could be long-term. Students and their tutors were all consulted about changes and participated in the assessment of the new teaching programmes.
