Prenatal detection of fetal anomalies in pregnancies complicated by insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
A combination of blood tests and ultrasound examinations may accurately detect fetal defects in women with insulin-dependent diabetes. Researchers conducted maternal blood tests and comprehensive fetal ultrasound tests on 289 women with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and their infants. Twenty-one fetuses and eight newborns had defects, including 15 heart defects. Six infants died as a result of their defects and four were electively aborted. Detailed multiimage fetal heart ultrasound exams detected defects much better than did standard four-chamber views of the heart. Two of the 15 mothers of infants with heart defects had normal blood sugar levels at the beginning of pregnancy, a finding which supports the use of detailed heart ultrasound exams to detect defects.

The effect of the source of transfused blood on the rate of consumption of transfused red blood cells in pregnancies affected by red blood cell alloimmunization
Article Abstract:
Fetuses with a red blood cell deficiency associated with alloimmunization may require fewer transfusions if the mother donates blood rather than an anonymous blood donor. Changes in hemoglobin levels were compared in 43 alloimmune fetuses given either maternal or anonymous donor blood throughout the pregnancy. Hemoglobin levels did not decrease as much among fetuses given maternal blood compared to anonymously donated blood particularly after the 33rd week of pregnancy. Infants given maternal blood transfusions during pregnancy had higher hemoglobin levels at birth than those given donor blood.

The effects of repeat doses of antenatal corticosteroids on maternal adrenal function
Article Abstract:
Repeated weekly doses of corticosteroids may suppress a pregnant woman's adrenal glands. Corticosteroids are given to pregnant women in premature labor to promote fetal lung maturity. If the woman does not deliver in 7 days, the drugs are often given again every week.
