Prenatal genetic carrier testing using triple disease screening
Article Abstract:
Prenatal counseling may help many pregnant couples accept genetic testing as well as help them decide what to do based on the results. Researchers gave genetic counseling and education to 2,824 Ashkenazi Jewish people who had been referred for genetic testing for Tay-Sachs disease (TSD). Over 90% agreed to be tested also for type 1 Gaucher disease (GD) and cystic fibrosis (CF). Twenty-one couples tested positive: eight for TSD, six for CF and seven for GD. Three of those testing positive for TSD and three of those testing positive for CF elected to terminate the pregnancy when prenatal diagnosis revealed their child would be affected.

Comparison of the Atkins, Ornish, Weight Watchers, and Zone Diets for weight loss and heart disease risk reduction: A randomized trial
Article Abstract:
A single-center randomized trial of overweight adults was conducted to assess adherence rates and the effectiveness of Atkins, Ornish, Weight Watchers, and Zone, four popular diets, for weight loss and cardiac risk factor reduction. The results indicated that each popular diet modestly reduced body weight and several cardiac risk factors at one year, and that the overall dietary adherence rates were low.

Unique lipoprotein phenotype and genotype associated with exceptional longevity
Article Abstract:
Large lipoprotein particles may be associated with longevity, according to a study of 1,276 people. The group included 213 Ashkenazi Jews who had an average age of 98 and 216 of their children. This group had larger HDL and LDL particles than the rest of the group. They were also more likely to have a particular variation in a gene that is involved in cholesterol metabolism.
