Preparing to face a funding crisis in physician training
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn's House of Delegates plans to step in develop a funding plan for physician education now that the federal government plans to cut back on subsidies for physician education. The AMA recommends an all-payer system to fund physician education, but the House of Delegates wants to consider a range of plans. In addition, the House of Delegates plans to institute safeguards to protect residents whose programs are being downsized or eliminated. Several additional plans of the House of Delegates are discussed.

Federal project pays N.Y. med schools to cut residency slots
Article Abstract:
The Health Care Financing Administration will continue graduate medical education program funding for 41 New York hospitals even though the facilities are decreasing the number of residency slots they offer. Officials hope cutting residency slots by at least 20% will reduce physician oversupply and allow the teaching hospitals to revamp their programs.
