Pretreatment of human amnion-chorion with vitamins C and E prevents hypochlorous acid-induced damage
Article Abstract:
Hypochlorous acid damages fetal membranes but this damage can be completely prevented by vitamins C and E. Hypochlorous acid is produced by immune cells during infection because it can destroy micro-organisms. It is also a component in cigarette smoke that could cause premature rupture of fetal membranes.

Vitamins C and E: missing links in preventing preterm premature rupture of membranes?
Article Abstract:
Vitamin E and C supplements during pregnancy may prevent premature rupture of membranes. The fetal membranes are very susceptible to free radical damage, which can be prevented by antioxidants such as vitamin C and E.

Fetal sacral length in the ultrasonographic assessment of gestational age
Article Abstract:
The age of a fetus may be determined by ultrasonographic measurement of the length of the sacrum. The sacrum is the triangular bone below the lumbar vertebrae of the spine between the two hip bones. Among 586 fetuses between 15 and 41 weeks of gestation that underwent ultrasonographic measurement of their biparietal diameter (BPD), sacral length, femur length and head circumference, 506 exhibited normal growth and 80 exhibited abnormal growth. The age of both fetuses with normal growth and those with abnormal growth could be determined from ultrasonographic measurement of their sacrum. The length of the sacrum increased linearly between 15 and 41 weeks of gestation. Sacral length agreed with other standard measurements used to determine the age of a fetus. These measurements included BPD, femur length and head circumference. Measurement of sacral length may be most useful for determining the age of a fetus in the third trimester of pregnancy.
