Cervical shedding of herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus throughout the menstrual cycle in women infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1
Article Abstract:
HIV-infected women may shed herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus in cervical secretions, according to a study of 17 women. The virus may not cause any symptoms when shed, and could pose a risk not only for sexual partners but also newborn babies.

Selenium deficiency is associated with shedding of HIV-1-infected cells in the female genital tract
Article Abstract:
Selenium deficiency can triple an HIV-infected woman's risk of shedding the virus in vaginal secretions, according to a study of 318 HIV-infected women in Kenya. This indicates that proper nutrition might make HIV-infected women less infectious.

Hormonal contraception and risk of sexually transmitted disease acquisition: results from a prospective study
Article Abstract:
The use of hormonal contraceptives such as oral or injectable contraceptives can alter a woman's susceptibility to sexually transmitted diseases. For this reason, all sexually active women who use hormonal contraceptives should still use a condom to protect themselves from HIV and other infectious organisms that are transmitted sexually.
