Prevalence and clinical features oflumbar zygapophysial joint pain: a study in an Australian population with chronic low back pain
Article Abstract:
Pain arising from the joints between the lumbar vertebrae appear to be a common cause of low back pain, but there are no clinical features that allow it to be distinguished as the source. Sixty-three patients with low back pain underwent a thorough history and physical examination. All patients had failed to respond to conservative therapy and had experienced pain for 2 to 20 years. Local anesthetic was injected directly into the joint on the assumption that if pain were originating in the joint, it would be relieved. Three injections were given a week apart. Saline was always the first of the three. It was injected into the muscle alongside the joint in order to eliminate the placebo effect. Forty percent of the group failed to obtain relief from saline, but obtained 50% or more reduction of pain with anesthetic injection. No historical features or noninvasive clinical tests predicted which patients would respond to anesthetic.

Quantifying digital vascular disease in patients with primary Raynaud's phenomenon and systemic sclerosis
Article Abstract:
Assessment of blood flow in the fingers provides important diagnostic information in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon and systemic sclerosis. In these conditions, blood flow in the fingers is compromised by cold exposure, emotional state, autoimmune vascular damage, and other causes. Microscopic examination of the nailfold can be used to measure capillary diameters and blood flow velocity. Laser and ultrasound Doppler flow meters provide useful blood flow data, and thermography can measure hand temperature. Finger blood pressure indicates the quality of flow in arteries of the fingers.

Prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon in a healthy Greek population
Article Abstract:
About 5% of Greeks have Raynaud's disease, according to a survey of 756 employees of a Greek hospital. Raynaud's disease causes numbness of fingers when they are exposed to cold. Women in this study were almost twice as likely to have the condition as men.
