Capture-recapture models including covariate effects
Article Abstract:
Log-linear and logit models for estimating incidence of a disease have been compared with and without covariates. Log-linear methods are used usually to estimate population size, given that not all sources of notification are dependent when capture-recapture methods are used to estimate incidence of a disease with use of a multiple-source registry. Simulated data was used to compare estimates from different models. The crude estimate of population size is biased when sources are not independent. Analyses adjusting for covariates give less biased estimates. With no covariates, or if all covariates are categorical, the log-linear model and the logit model are equivalent. The log-linear model must not include continuous variables. To keep potential bias at a minimum in estimating incidence, covariates should be included in the analysis and design of multiple-source disease registries.

Per-contact risk of human immunodeficiency virus transmission between male sexual partners
Article Abstract:
The per-contact risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission between male sexual partners in various types of contact is discussed as seen from a prospective cohort study involving 2,189 high-risk bi- and homosexual men in three US cities, 1992-94. Estimated per-contact risk of HIV infection from unprotected receptive anal intercourse was 0.82% with a partner known to be HIV positive and 0.27% with partners of undetermined serostatus not excluded.
