Preventing Adolescent Health-Risk Behaviors by Strengthening Protection During Childhood
Article Abstract:
Communities have recognized that the teenage problems of crime, teen pregnancy, violence, poor schools, and substance abuse need to be addressed and prevented, but efforts to do so have generally been through separate programs. The need for a more cost-effective approach has forced re-evaluations which recognize that many of the same factors and conditions produce these varied results. Strong social bonds in school and family seems to protect adolescents against a wide variety of socially negative situations. The intervention discussed here aimed at reducing specific risk factors for aggressive behavior in the early school grades, academic failure, and poor family management practices including unclear rules, poor monitoring of behavior, and inconsistent or harsh discipline.

Relation of Peer and Media Influences to the Development of Purging Behaviors Among Preadolescent and Adolescent Girls
Article Abstract:
Many teenage girls begin purging and vomiting to control their weight because they want to be as thin as models and actresses they see in magazines, movies, and television programs. This was the conclusion of a study of 6,982 girls between the ages of 9 and 14. During one year of follow-up, 74 began using laxatives or vomiting to control their weight. In addition to the media obsession with thinness, the importance of thinness among their friends often led to purging.
