Preventing infection from indwelling catheters
Article Abstract:
Infection is a common problem for patients with a long-term catheter, and can also be an immediate post-operative threat. Research indicates that many nurses do not follow basic hygiene procedures when dealing with catheters, such as washing the patient's genital area or washing their hands. This has prompted the PHLS to issue clinical guidelines entitled 'Preventing Hospital Acquired Infection.' A key way to prevent infection is to maintain a closed system. This can be achieved through wearing a night drainage bag that can be attached to the leg bag, thus making it unnecessary to disconnect the catheter at night.
