Prevention better than cure
Article Abstract:
Pneumococcal pneumonia is a serious infection which often causes death. Older people may need a chest x-ray to diagnose the infection, while children's symptoms include fever, sickness and fits. About 60% of the general population may be carriers of the bacteria and they are spread via oral contact or water droplets. Antibiotics can be given to people at risk, however, the bacteria are becoming resistant to these and patients with a strain which is resistant should not be nursed next to other vulnerable patients. A vaccine is available and this could reduce the death rate.

A multidisciplinary approach to occipital pressure ulcers related to cervical collars
Article Abstract:
A task force eliminated occipital pressure ulcers due to cervical collars by writing new nurse and C-spine clearing rules and reevaluating the hospital's product choice. Cervical collars that reduced pressure on the skin of the patient were researched and a new type was chosen. A flowchart designating the necessary steps nurses need to take when caring for the skin of a patient in a collar was developed. Various hospital departments assisted in creating a better procedure for determining when a patient's collar could be removed.
