Prevention of the transient adverse effects of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (buserelin) in metastatic prostatic carcinoma by administration of an antiandrogen (nilutamide)
Article Abstract:
A substance (buserelin) equivalent to a hormone that triggers the release of growth hormone was administered to treat advanced prostate cancer. (The prostate is a gland at the base of the penis). This treatment caused a transient increase in blood testosterone levels over the first seven days of the treatment. This increase is generally accompanied by elevated levels of a related substance (prostatic acid phosphate) in the blood plasma and an increase in illness. Tests were conducted to determine whether nilutamide, which blocks male hormones, can counteract these effects. Five of the 17 men treated with nilutamide suffered new or increased bone pain. Twelve of the 19 men not treated with the drug suffered similar effects. Acute urinary tract obstruction occurred in one man who did not receive nilutamide. Although the alterations in testosterone levels were similar in both groups, levels of prostatic acid decreased immediately in the men treated with nilutamide. In men not receiving nilutamide, prostatic acid levels increased transiently and decreased at the end of the second week. Thus nilutamide can prevent the adverse side-effects of a buserelin-induced transient rise in testosterone levels in men with prostate cancer.

A controlled study of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist (buserelin) for the induction of folliculogenesis before in vitro fertilization
Article Abstract:
In cases of infertility, one common treatment is to induce the production of eggs, which can be collected, fertilized outside of the body and then implanted in the uterus. To induce the production of eggs a series of drugs are often given, usually a combination of clomiphene citrate and human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG). Unfortunately not all women have an adequate response. A high level of luteinizing hormones may contribute to the failure in these women. This study uses a compound, buserelin, which reduces the circulating levels of luteinizing hormone together with HMG to induce egg production. The authors conclude that buserelin and HMG improve the chances of women to produce eggs even when previous treatment with clomiphene and HMG has failed.

In vitro fertilization with single blastocyst-stage versus single cleavage-stage embryos
Article Abstract:
A randomized controlled trial is designed to determine whether there are differences in the rates of pregnancy and delivery between women randomly assigned to undergo transfer of a single cleavage-stage embryo and those assigned to undergo transfer of a single blastocyst-stage embryo. The results show that the transfer of a single blastocyst-stage embryo significantly increases the likelihood of pregnancy and delivery as compared with transfer of a single cleavage-stage embryo.
