Price of technology: a blind spot
Article Abstract:
In a recent report, photopheresis was shown to be slightly more effective than D-penicillamine therapy in treating patients with systemic sclerosis. But the monthly cost of photopheresis was $6,964 compared to $102 for D-penicillamine. An expensive treatment that produces only marginal improvement should remain experimental. Journals could publish the costs associated with various experimental treatments. Patients should only have to share the cost of treatment they receive after they have been counseled. Insurance companies could cover experimental treatments and simply require patients to pay a larger copayment. As experimental treatments are confirmed or debunked by research, the patient's copayment would decrease or increase.

What Price Mice?
Article Abstract:
Biomedical researchers should petition Congress to ensure that mice, rats, and birds are exempt from protection under the Animal Welfare Act. Mice and rats are the most commonly used laboratory animals, and excessive legislation protecting them would be an enormous burden on the research community.
