Profits prompt review of FDA orphan drug program
Article Abstract:
Congress' Office of Technology Assessment wants the Food and Drug Administration to review charges of price gouging by the Genzyme Corp for Ceredase, a drug used to treat people with Goucher's disease. The drug was primarily developed by researchers at the National Institutes of Health under the Orphan Drug Act. The act allows partnerships between government and industry to develop expensive drugs for diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 people. Patients are currently charged as much as $500,000 per year for Ceredase.
