Programmed cell death (apoptosis) as a possible pathway to metalloproteinase activation and fetal membrane degradation in premature rupture of membranes
Article Abstract:
Premature rupture of membranes may be caused by a form of natural cell death called apoptosis. In a study of 28 pregnant women, those with premature rupture of membranes had increased expression of genes that cause natural cell death in membrane tissue samples.

Support for an infection-induced apoptotic pathway in human fetal membranes
Article Abstract:
Bacterial lipopolysaccharides may trigger apoptosis in fetal membranes, causing premature rupture of the membranes. Apoptosis is the medical term for natural cell death.

Distinct molecular events suggest different pathways for preterm labor and premature rupture of membranes
Article Abstract:
Researchers have found molecular differences between premature labor and premature rupture of fetal membranes. They studied the production of matrix metalloproteinases, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases, pro-apoptotic proteins and anti-apoptotic proteins. Apoptosis is the medical term for natural cell death.
