Prolapse of a neovagina created by self-dilatation
Article Abstract:
Congenital absence of the vagina, a rare condition, is often associated with other abnormalities. A new vagina (neovagina) can be created surgically or by self-dilatation. The case report is presented of a young woman born without a vagina, and with abnormalities of the heart, kidneys, ears, arms, and thumbs. The patient received instruction in self-dilatation at the age of 17, and succeeded in enlarging her rudimentary vagina (initially a ''dimple'' between 1 and 2 centimeters in depth) to a length of 12 centimeters. She was able to carry out a moderately satisfactory coitus. At the age of 24, however, the neovagina began to protrude, and ultimately prolapsed (dropped down), with a loop of small bowel pressing on it from behind. The patient underwent successful reconstructive surgery, and resumed sexual activity six weeks later. Descriptions are presented of vaginal anatomy and of the surgical procedure carried out.
