Prone to attack
Article Abstract:
Mental health nurse Michael Andrews is waiting to hear whether surgeons will have to remove his left eye after an attack by a patient. He believes that the closure of the large mental hospitals has led to an increase in violence. Nurse and West Lambeth Community Care NHS Trust Chief Exec. Erville Millar agrees, and points to figures showing that assaults on staff requiring medical attention have risen by 50% in two years. Nevertheless Forensic Psychiatric Nurses' Assn Chmn Tony Hillis points out that mental health nurses' role is to look after vulnerable people and that they must show tolerance.
