Article Abstract:
It is still common in the UK media for nurses to be portrayed as incapable of being creative or political or holding positions of authority. It is very demoralizing for nurses to have their achievements overlooked or belittled. A negative public image makes it difficult for ordinary people to be aware of nurses' full contribution to health care and society. This in turn leads to nurses being denied equality in health care decision-making. However, there are now signs of a more positive image of nursing emerging.

The traditional view of nurses' subordination to doctors was originally developed through the works of Florence Nightingale and her efforts to develop an efficient health service. Modern medicine needs to refocus a more productive use of talented nursing staff.

Feeling support
Article Abstract:
Nurses are expected to show their feelings and administer to the emotional needs of their patients in contrast to the past. Increased pressures on a nurse's time mean this is becoming difficult, but this support is important and should be provided.
