Article Abstract:
The UK National Health Service (NHS) relies on agency nurses to provide employment cover during periods of staff shortage. It is important that a service exists for emergency situations but, in some parts of the country, the NHS relies on agency nurses to cover permanent staffing needs. Agency nurses and nursing agencies have a bad public image but this is unjustified. Most agency nurses are well-trained professionals, and good agencies are not making excessive profits from the NHS. Any problems may be due to the health authority's lack of care in checking up on agencies and registrations.

Parade and prejudice
Article Abstract:
The conflict between security forces and Protestant Orangemen in Drumcree, Northern Ireland, caused considerable problems for staff at Craigavon Area Hospital in Portadown, Northern Ireland. The weekend of Jul 12 presents problems every year as Orangemen parade, and staff at the hospital are on alert for weeks before the event. However, there were particular challenges in 1998. Many civilians were treated for plastic bullet wounds, and the lives of premature babies were placed at risk as the neonatal unit had to be evacuated twice because of bomb scares.

Just what the nurse ordered
Article Abstract:
Up to 9 million pounds sterling will be invested by the health action zone (HAZ) in South Yorkshire, UK, with the emphasis on providing better health for the local community. Nurses involved in the HAZ project believe issues of health are not only associated with illness but with people's social needs and requirements. One local project is aimed at reducing the number of teenage pregnancies by allowing young girls the opportunity to look after a robot baby doll, which requires total attention 24-hours per day.
