Questions of care
Article Abstract:
Peter Keene published a review of the care his 80-year-old mother received under the Basildon and Thurrock General Hospitals NHS Trust in the UK. The review includes criticism of areas including pressure sore management, monitoring activities and help with daily living activities. Keene published 1,000 copies of the review but has never made a formal complaint. His action arose from a professional perception of the poor communication in the health care team. Keene intended it to provide a learning experience, but has been disappointed with the trust's response.

Promising start but must try harder
Article Abstract:
Many UK health care professionals are unimpressed with the first twelve months of the Labour government, after it was elected to power in May 1997. Health Minister Frank Dobson has been criticised over his failure to reduce National Health Service 1.3 million people waiting lists and a low pay award to nurses which equalled just 2.7% for 1997-8. An investment of 2.15 million pounds sterling was allocated to spearhead a midwife and nurses recruitment drive, with 9 million pounds sterling being invested in mental health services in Scotland.
