Warts up, nurse?
Article Abstract:
Around 70 different types of human papillomaviruses (HPV) have been found. They are most likely to occur when there is a deficiency in the immune system. The development of a vaccine to act as prevention against some HPVs is likely, with gene therapy still in early its stages. Some HPVs can cause cancer, such as types 16,18 31 and 45, which cause cervical cancer. Some 500,000 cases of cervical cancers are diagnosed worldwide each year. Human papillomaviruses are made up of DNA containing infectious viruses. Some 25 of known HPVs infect the genital tract.

A gut feeling
Article Abstract:
Doctors have known about viruses which cause gastrointestinal problems only since the 1970s. Virologists in the 1950s identified over 100 viruses in faeces but none of these caused gut problems. It was the introduction of electron microscopy in the 1970s which led to the identification of viruses associated with gut problems. Small round structured viruses were the first discovery, followed by rotaviruses. These two groups of viruses were the second and fourth most frequent causes of gastrointestinal infection in the UK in the first six weeks of 1998.

The ferret files
Article Abstract:
Flu epidemics have baffled scientists for years and little has been discovered as to why outbreaks occur where and when they do. The flu virus was isolated in 1933 enabling vaccines to be developed which are given to people who are deemed to be at most risk, such as the elderly or young with breathing problems. The A type virus causes most problems, although there are three types of flu virus in all. Epidemics continue to occur periodically and scientist have so far failed to discover the reason for these outbreaks.
