Radiation sensitivity of resting and activated nonspecific cytotoxic cells of T lineage and NK lineage
Article Abstract:
Several types of T lymphocytes (a specific class of white blood cells) are able to destroy foreign or cancerous cells through the release of a collection of enzymes and other cellular products contained within them. This process is known as degranulation. An important cell type involved in this immunologic process is the natural killer (NK) cell. This study examines the ability of NK and LAK cells to withstand the levels of radiation that would occur in radiation therapy. LAK cells were found to be relatively resistant to radiation, compared to NK cells. With extremely high radiation doses, the NK cells were still able to mediate cytotoxic activity. Cells receiving maximum doses of radiation (over 10,000 cGy) were examined by electron microscope and found to have damage to their internal cellular structure, and their surface membrane. Similarly, LAK cells receiving over 10,000 cGy were able to join with tumor cells, but could not release their granules.

Rapid expression of protooncogenes c-fos and c-myc in B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells during differentiation induced by phorbol ester and calcium ionophore
Article Abstract:
Peripheral blood mononuclear cells collected from patients with B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia were incubated and stimulated with a substance called TPA (tetradecanoylphorbol, a phorbol ester), which causes cancer producing genes (oncogenes) in normal cells, as well as the calcium ionophore A23187, or a combination of the two. Some of the cultures were treated with a drug to increase the ability of calcium to pass through cell membranes, either alone or in conjunction with TPA. Following the treatment, the two cellular oncogenes were investigated. It was found that the ability of the leukemic cells to produce the oncogenes was intact, and that this process was unaffected by calcium permeating the cells.
