Reading up on homes
Article Abstract:
The UK government is trying to help people make informed choices about nursing home care. Reports of nursing home inspections have been available for public consultation since Apr 1998 to aid this process. The government is aiming to improve the quality of nursing home inspections through the introduction of a trained, independent inspectorate and a set of national standards to act as a benchmark in the sector. However, these features are not yet in place so the current quality of reports is variable, they may be biased, and assessments may be based on inappropriate aspects of provision.

A matter of urgency
Article Abstract:
The shrinking of the kidneys which occurs naturally as a person becomes older can lead to problems with urinary continence, especially if acute illness or the worsening of a chronic disease takes place. Reduced renal function makes it harder for older people to dispose of fluid loads, and this can in turn lead to cardiac failure from increased blood volume if too much intravenous fluid is administered too quickly. Further problems can arise if there is interaction between a number of different drugs.

Are we sliding towards an acceptance of euthanasia?
Article Abstract:
Some observers feel that the UK is gradually moving towards an acceptance of euthanasia. They believe that this is a negative trend, and argue that doctors must be fully aware that they cannot intentionally end a patient's life. Others hold a different view, indicating that there are times when intervention to prolong a patient's life is not appropriate. They state that it is wrong for doctors to have to fear that allowing nature to take its course will be seen as euthanasia.
