Second-class treatment
Article Abstract:
Age Concern has been gathering evidence that older people are discriminated against by the National Health Service. They are being denied treatment for a range of conditions such as cancer and heart conditions because of their age. Many are not aware that they have been discriminated against because they are not told about possible treatments or encouraged to have preventative screening. Older men having prostate surgery do not receive counselling about the physical side effects. Patients' dignity is removed when nurses talk to them as if they are children.

Freedom of choice
Article Abstract:
The UK's Community Care Act was designed to encourage the growth of flexible services to allow people with medical and social care needs to be supported in the community. However, continuing care for older people is sometimes lacking. In answer to such a problem, the London borough of Hackney has developed an integrated care scheme, known as the Home Choice project, to provide 24-hour support for up to 32 elderly people in their own homes with the objective of providing a full range of health and social care services.
