Real men don't get sick: machismo-friendly Texas clinic addresses male resistance to medical care
Article Abstract:
Men sometimes avoid consulting a doctor or discussing certain symptoms because of their belief that they should be tough. Because of this, diseases such as prostate cancer are often left undiagnosed. The Male Health Center, founded in 1989 by Kenneth A. Goldberg, in Dallas, TX, focuses on such patients. The center, which is staffed by urologists and family practice doctors, also includes a dozen 'patient advocates' who provide a quick overview of male diseases and are usually prostate cancer survivors themselves. A health hotline service is also in operation.
