Recognising the smiles that cry for help
Article Abstract:
A project set up at the Lindley Special Care Unit, Huddersfield, shows how difficult and complex it can be to communicate with people who have little or no speech and limited understanding of spoken language. The project examined communication between clients and their visitors, both professional and non-professional. Visitors' ability to communicate with clients was limited by their expectations of the clients, and also by inexperience of social dynamics within the unit. Visitors also tended to interpret smiles positively, when they could also signal negative emotions.

Recognising and dealing with the abuse of older people
Article Abstract:
Most professionals are familiar with the phenomenon of elder abuse, although there has been little information available to practitioners until recently. New efforts are being made to place elder abuse on the health and social services agendas. Guidelines have been issued to local authority social services departments and they have been urged to develop policies.
