Size matters, but so does care
Article Abstract:
Standards for nursing homes, proposed by the UK's Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA), are attracting fierce debate. The CPA submitted the standards to the Department of Health in Jan 1999 at the request of the private nursing home sector. This sector is now the one raising the most objections to the proposals. The main area of concern is the proposed minimum size for residents' rooms in nursing homes. Other areas covered in the proposed standards include staffing levels and ratios, nursing care, and access to other forms of medical care.

Is ultrasound scanning really necessary?
Article Abstract:
There are increasing concerns that women are not properly informed about the risks that ultrasound scans may pose to them and their baby. The NHS is taking a closer look at non-essential procedures, and the charity, Midwives' Information and Resource Service along with the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at York University, have developed leaflets on ultrasound scans. These are aimed at helping expectant mothers to make informed choices.
