Relationship between Medicare's Hospital Compare performance measures and mortality rates
Article Abstract:
A cross-sectional study of hospital care is conducted to determine whether quality measured with the process measures used in the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) Hospital Compare are correlated with and are predictive of hospitals' risk-adjusted mortality rates. Results suggest that the CMS's existing set of performance measures are not closely linked to patient outcomes, thus necessitating improved performance measures for better health care.

Association of transmission intensity and age with clinical manifestations and case fatality of severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria
Article Abstract:
A description of the clinical manifestations and case fatality of severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria at varying altitudes resulting in varying levels of transmission are carried out. The studies suggests that an increase in the proportion of cases with more fatal manifestations of severe malaria is likely to occur only after transmission is reduced to low levels where the overall incidence is likely to be low.

Risk stratification for In-hospital mortality in acutely decompensated heart failure: Classification and regression tree analysis
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to develop a practical user-friendly bedside tool for risk stratification for patients hospitalized with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). The results suggest that ADHF patients at low, intermediate and high-risk for in-hospital mortality can be identified using vital sign and laboratory data obtained on hospital admission.
