Renal failure
Article Abstract:
Renal failure is classed as an inability of the kidneys to regulate water and waste product removal. The intrusive nature of renal disease care means nurses must be sensitive to patients on a physical and psychological level. The use of dialysis is recommended for patients who suffer end-stage renal disease, which can result in a high degree of lost renal function. Severe cases of renal failure can be rectified by organ transplantation, resulting in a better quality of life for the majority of patients.

A critical response
Article Abstract:
Many intensive care units were found to have either no or little formal training in the use of filtration units to treat acute renal failure in a survey carried out by R.A.F. staff into whether training of both practice and theory is given to staff in ICU units and what form this takes. The researchers also wanted to find out if the technical management of renal failure treatment was an extended role. Replies were received from 86% of 204 senior nurses surveyed.

Clinical view
Article Abstract:
There is a need for better training and written information for specialist nurses. Education and practice of specialist nurses would be more dynamic and imaginative if new methods of spreading skills and knowledge were introduced, such as Internet projects, multimedia packages, booklets and pamphlets.
